Robert Bonisolo

  • Biography:

    A Canadian with Italian origins, a saxophonist with exceptional qualities, a greatly appreciated soloist in the jazz scene, a highly esteemed professional at international levels and extraordinary teacher, Robert Bonisolo studied music at Berklee College
    of Music and The Banff School of Fine Arts.
    In 1987 he won the “Canadian Rising Star Award” and the “American Rising Star Award”.
    He has studied and performed with some of the best musicians
    in the world: Joe Viola, Jerry Bergonzi, Joe Lovano, John La Porta, George Garzone, Steve Coleman, John Abercrombie, David Liebman, Richie Bierach, Kenny Wheeler, Dave Holland, Pat LaBarbera. Upon arriving in Italy, in 1990 he began to study classical saxophone. He obtained his five year classical “diploma” from the Conservatory of Ferrara.
    Through out his career ROBERT BONISOLO has collaborated with important artists: italian musicians (Gianni Basso, Rosario Bonaccorso, Fabrizio Bosso, Giulio Capiozzo, Rossana Casale, Barbara Casini, Gianni Cazzola, Renato Chicco, Roberto Dani, Antonio Faraò, Paolo Fresu, Roberto Gatto, Sandro Gibellini, Rosario Giuliani, Piero Leveratto, Dado Moroni) and international musicians (Franco Ambrosetti, Randy Brecker, Hiram Bullock, Billy Drummond, Sangoma Everett, Tom Harrell, Reggie Johnson, Tom Kirkpatrick, Lee Konitz, Andy Milnes, Louis Nash, Ben Perowsky, Ben Street, George Robert, Mike Stern, Steve Swallow, Miroslav Vitous, Kenny Wheeler, Larry Willis, Elliot Zigmund) and orchestras as The Tommy Dorsey Orchestra, The Carla Bley Big Band and the italian Lydian Sound Orchestra from 1993. With LSO he played with Terrell Stafford, Charles McPherson, Don Moye and Mingus Dynasty, in Italy and in Europe,  and he recorded the cds “Melodious Thunk”, “Timon of Athens Suite”, “Bukowski Blues”, “Monk at Town Hall & More”, “Back to Da Capo”, “Live in Appleby”.
    He recorded many cds as guest and sideman; in 2009 his debut record as a leader with the cd “Open The Cage” (Almar).
    Since 2006 he has been Professor of saxophone and improvisation at the school Conservatoire du Lausanne in Switzerland and now he’s jazz sax professor also at Conservatorio Bonporti in Trento.
